The Global Standard for Food Safety was developed to specify the safety, quality and operational criteria required within a food-producing organisation to meet its obligations to comply with legislation and protect consumers.

Originally introduced by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) for food manufacturers supplying private label goods to UK retailers, this standard was revised at regular intervals to reflect the latest principles in food safety. Now it has reached global application as a framework to assist food production in every company.
The structure and content of the standard is designed to allow for the assessment of a company’s premises, operational systems and procedures by a qualified third party – the certification body – against the requirements of the standard.
The Standard does not apply to activities such as wholesale, import, distribution and storage that are beyond the direct control of the company. The BRC has developed a series of World Standards that set out the requirements for a wide range of activities in production, packaging and storage and distribution of food products.
BRCGS requirements are more extensive than HACCP requirements. BRCGS includes extensive GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) regulations, including the factory environment, requirements regarding organisation and communication
